I still dream of how we used to huddle together under the stars, giggling and happy and freezing together. We could stand there, shivering, for hours. It seems so absurd now.

“You are so unhappy,” the man says. The man who is older, who is wiser, who is not hitting on me.
“You are so very, so obviously unhappy.”
“No,” I say. “I’m okay. It’s just this guy I used to know.”

I see him years later, in a remote city, when he slides into the empty seat at my cafe table. “Hi.”
A sensation like hot liquid shoots through my torso and arrives, aflame, in my cheeks. I pray it doesn’t show. “Hi.”
Small talk ensues. I effect serene composure and try not to stammer.
“What have you been up to?” he asks.
“Well, I got engaged,” I lie, holding his gaze.
He blinks. “Wow.” A flash of white teeth. “Me too.”

We were in his bed, watching tv, when a spark of courage raced through my heart.
“Have you ever loved someone so completely that you don’t know where they stop and you begin?”
A pause … a sigh … a grin.
“You always know just how I’m feeling,” he said. “That’s why you’re so cool.”
I waited for him to continue.
“I just don’t know if I should tell Jennifer or not,” he said.

“You remind me of somebody,” she said. “Somebody I saw in a movie once, I think.”
She kept bringing it up, all through dinner, and all the way back to my apartment. She kissed me at the door, then pulled away. “Now I remember,” she said.

‘So I was at the library and ran into Jon and we were talking and he asked me if he could call me. Uuuhh … is that okay?’
This couldn’t be the Jon who had kissed me ardently last night before. The same Jon who had left a ‘just-thinking-about-you-wanted-to-hear-your-sexy-voice’ message on my machine not two hours earlier. Could it?
A plastic smile attached itself to my face as I told her, ‘Of course it’s okay. He’s just some guy I went out with a few times. No big thing.’
– Poornima Ravishankar

“Alef yud lamedh lamedh hay. That’s my Hebrew name. It means ‘star.'”
I studied what she had written on my shoe. “So why won’t you kiss me?”
“I will. I just have to get used to you.”
– Harley McGrew

Two days before I gave him back the ring, I joined the gym. Not for exercise, not for release. Not to do anything but run on the treadmills. I figured if I was going to run from something, I might as well get a head start.

He broke away from kissing me and gazed out the window.
“What are you thinking?” I asked.
His eyes were filled with pain. “How to tell you this.”
– Lyndsay Brooks

He wore suspenders and glasses and his hair, just so.
I gave him the candy he liked but could never find.
And we made fun of models.
The next day, he bought two tickets to London.
One for himself.
The other, for the girl he met after we’d parted the day before.

Dreaming with a Broken Heart

When you're dreaming with
a broken heart
The waking up
is the hardest part
You roll out of bed
and down on your knees
And for a moment
you can hardly breathe
Do I have to fall asleep
with roses in my hand?
And would you
get them if I did?
