“I hope you find a nice boy,” he said. I didn’t tell him that I’d thought I had.

‘So I was at the library and ran into Jon and we were talking and he asked me if he could call me. Uuuhh … is that okay?’
This couldn’t be the Jon who had kissed me ardently last night before. The same Jon who had left a ‘just-thinking-about-you-wanted-to-hear-your-sexy-voice’ message on my machine not two hours earlier. Could it?
A plastic smile attached itself to my face as I told her, ‘Of course it’s okay. He’s just some guy I went out with a few times. No big thing.’

“If you aren’t happy, why don’t you leave?”
“It’s not that simple.”
“Yes it is,” he replies, standing. “Goodbye.”
The door closes with a soft click, pops back open as soon as he lets go of the handle. A second time, with more determination, and this time it stays shut.

“What if I fell in?” I asked her, cautiously looking down at the water.
“I –” she walked over to the railing and leaned against it. “I would find someone to help.”
I quickly turned my back to the water and crossed my arms. “You wouldn’t jump in after me?”
She laughed and turned to look at me. “What good would that do?”
I looked away, upwards. I said, “I think it’s going to rain. We should get back to the car.”

When he stopped to dig through a box of printer cartridges I turned and looked around. I caught her staring at me again, mooning over me almost.
A long moment would pass before she would see I saw her watching me and she turned her head away. But inside I felt nothing, and eventually she will see that.

I was smiling when I walked in with her, and people noticed. Once we sat down, I realized I had underestimated her appearance. I tried to be subtle when looking at her firm young body. She had small, strong shoulders, and freckles that I hadn’t noticed before. They were a fitting compliment to her big blue eyes, which remained fixed on the television over my head.

He paused in the doorway, his back to me. “I didn’t ask you to love me,” he says quietly.
I stare at his back, his form outlined in the light coming from outside. He doesn’t turn around. He doesn’t move. I can feel my heartbeat like a timpani drum, and I wonder if he can’t hear it, too. I look down at my hands, twisting unhappily, and then I look back at him.
“I didn’t want to love you,” I say to his back. “I just do.”
I hear him sigh, and the door closes behind him.

Thinking of destruction, I walked behind them as they held hands and I couldn’t take my eyes off his ass. It was a fairly average ass, but it mesmerized me.
– Do you take milk in your coffee, he asked, giving me a strange look. I had interfered in their new love, all prickly and big-mouthed and bitter.
I was born more bright than beautiful and some things never change.

“I just want you to be happy.”
“I just want happiness to be you.”
“Well, then. There’s your problem.”
– Michael G. Solita

Stepping up from behind, I put my arms around her slight frame. I sighed as I breathed the faint scent of her perfume and noticed how wonderful it felt to have her against me.
“In all the time we’ve been together,” I proclaimed, “I don’t think I’ve ever told you how much I love you.”
I was too content to notice how she stiffened at these words.

Dreaming with a Broken Heart

When you're dreaming with
a broken heart
The waking up
is the hardest part
You roll out of bed
and down on your knees
And for a moment
you can hardly breathe
Do I have to fall asleep
with roses in my hand?
And would you
get them if I did?
