“So that’s it?”
I didn’t understand what he meant. “Wait, what just happened? Are we broken up?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, I’m not finishing this conversation until this weekend when we can finally talk in person.” I thought that he would at least agree to that.
“Then I don’t want to see you this weekend.”
– Courtney Trammell

He showed up an hour earlier than he was supposed to, with a panic-stricken look on his face and presents spilling from his arms.
“Listen,” he said. “Making you happy isn’t making me happy.”
“What makes you think I’m happy?”
– Lisa L.

“You know, I really do miss you.”
“I miss you too. Why are we apart?”
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe we should try to…”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because… just no.”
– Brad Dickson

“Do you care about me?”
He reached for my face and kissed me.
“Well, what’s your answer?” I asked through wet lips.
“That’s my answer.”
“A kiss?”
As he turned away, I wiped my mouth.
– Allison

“At least I know I’ve found my soulmate,” he said.
I stroked his hand, looking at my reflection in the frosty windshield, and decided not to tell him about Nathan.
– Leah Rorvig

“You know what?” he said. “Yesterday, I was sitting on my couch, not doing anything, and all of a sudden, I realized that my mind was just repeating your name over and over and over again. And it couldn’t stop.”

I stand on the ‘l’ platform and watch him walk down the street. A rumble comes from the south, and I turn to get a glimpse at the tracks. When I turn back, I see him standing on the street, looking up at me. I can feel his smile. I smile back, and then the train arrives. The connection is broken. By the time i can get to a smudged, initial-marked window, he is gone.

“We ought to talk,” I said.
“Talk, then.”
“I love you.”
“That’s not talking,” she said. “That’s just saying things.”
– Nick Sweeney

He told me he loved me. I told him it wasn’t possible, and chastised him for using the words too quickly and carelessly.
The next day, i got a note.
“I perhaps misphrased my attentions to you yesterday afternoon. It was then that I said ‘I love you.’ What I might have said is that ‘I love thee.’ A phrase used in a time when dragons were slain, mountains were climbed, and unimaginable deeds were performed for the sake of the feeling; a time when love was pure and endured. No, I do not love you. I love thee, and I love thee truly.”
I never again doubted his feelings.
– Shauna

It felt so good to have you pressed against me, your arms resting lightly below my breasts. I snuggled back into you and sighed deeply. I felt so safe.
And, you know, I was just about to say that out loud to you. “Oh…” I wanted to say, “I feel so safe in your arms.”
But I never got the words out. Just as I finished letting out the last little bit of my contented sigh, you began to tell me about her.

Dreaming with a Broken Heart

When you're dreaming with
a broken heart
The waking up
is the hardest part
You roll out of bed
and down on your knees
And for a moment
you can hardly breathe
...
Do I have to fall asleep
with roses in my hand?
And would you
get them if I did?
